Feature and Follow Friday (1)

I could swear that I'd done a Feature and Follow Friday hop before when I first began this blog but, alas, I can't find the post. I'm pretty sure that's how I first met fellow readers and writers in the blogging community.

Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and visiting everyone else's blogs. This hop is so much fun!

This week's question is:

Have you ever looked at book's cover and thought, This is going to horrible? But, was instead pleasantly surprised? Show us the cover and tell us about the book.

Um, guilty! I've done this a few times but the one book that totally comes to mind is this one:

I know! I'm crazy, right? I received a free copy of Vampire Academy in August 2008 when I went to a Breaking Dawn launch party (yes, I was a 17-year-old in love with Twilight). Straight up, I didn't like the cover so it sat on my bookshelf and gathered dust until November 2008. I began reading it because I needed some downtime from studying for exams (I still didn't think I would enjoy it) and, surprisingly, I didn't put it down until I finished it--it was THAT good!

I think the covers got better as the series progressed but I still don't like the cover for Vampire Academy. This series really needs to have the covers re-done, me thinks. I'm so glad I gave VA a chance though. It's definitely one of my favourite Young Adult series ever!

On a somewhat related note, I discovered this awesome poster a fan made for a potential VA movie. Love it!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  1. I agree...not a great cover but I always think that model is a young Angelina Jolie! :) Good choice!

  2. Hmmm, my VA book (paperback) has a different cover. I don't care for this one. I am a new follower! Here is my FF: Mom Reads My Books

  3. I almost didn't read Vampire Academy because of the title! Seriously! My friend kept recommending them to me and I kept putting off reading them because they sounded kind of cheesy. I finally sat down to read them one weekend because Zach was away for the weekend and I was bored. I totally fell in love! It was one series that I had to immediately download the next book so I could keep reading. I think I read them all in a week!

    1. I've never been into vampire novels (except Dracula by Bram Stoker--love that book to death!) so I think that also played a factor in why I was so reluctant to read VA.

  4. Komal! Really! You were judgemental on my all time fav series?!?! Clearly this was before you and I became BFF. haha.

  5. I haven't read this, but maybe I should :) Must say I'm not a huge vampire fan, even if I did adore Buffy and Angel. But I read all of Twilight in 4 days, so...yeah. :P

  7. I can't think of any however I know the opposite has been true for me---picking up a book with a great cover and then finding out it was aweful.

    1. That's true. I've picked up a book based on the cover and then ended up not enjoying it.

  8. LOL, I always judge a book by it's cover. You're right, the Vampire Academy cover is not great! BTW, you've been tagged in the Lucky 7 Meme - stop by my blog and check it out: http://rungwenrun.blogspot.com

  9. fun question! i definitely tend to judge books by their covers... i'm not a huge fan of the model girl YA book covers, so i'm probably missing out on lots of good reads tucked inside.

    happy sunday,

    1. The covers with models wearing extravagant dresses are pretty, but when nearly every book started following the trend, I got over it quickly. I like interesting covers.

  10. Yeah, I tend to judge a book by it's covers too--especially self-published books. I stayed away from Hunger Games for ages because I didn't like the cover. lol.

    1. I try not to judge a book by its cover because the content could be really good. I stayed away from the Hunger Games because there was such a hype about it, but I'm glad I read them.

  11. I've had that happen to me too. I'm trying to be more open and not just look at the cover. ;)

    1. If the blurb is really good then the cover won't matter to me.
