Author Interview: Michelle Flick

Today I get to interview one of my closest author friends, Michelle Flick. Michelle lives in Western New York with her family. She teaches 8th grade ELA and is a lover of coffee, dogs, and music. You can find Michelle on Facebook, twitter and on her blog: www.flickspicks1.blogspot.com

About the dog:

Fergie is real! She is a 5-year-old collie. She hates tiled floors, loves the outside, and is never far from her family members. She is as loving and loyal as the Fergie in the novel!

Tell us a bit about your latest release, WALKER?
Walker is a novel about a girl who can walk through dreams. At first she is freaked out by it, then she meets her dream boy, Nick. She is trying to acclimate to everything and then weird murders start to happen. Kate’s pretty smart so she starts to piece everything together.

In five words, describe your protagonist, Kate.
Girl next door, smart, tough

What was the inspiration behind WALKER?
There really wasn’t this big A HA! moment. More – I saw the sisters having a conversation. Then I wanted my collie in the story. But I’m a paranormal junkee – but I didn’t want to the typical, and thought about who was freaky and scary- and Freddy Krueger came to mind. Hello scary. So that was the narrative arc for the dream side of the novel. I then added JCru, Elise, and Colton because, let’s be honest – who doesn’t like a bitch, a loud mouth, and some eye candy? J BAM – The story matured.

Can you tell us about your previous release, THE OWENS LEGACY: REVELATIONS?
I loved this one. It’s about twin girl who can communicated telepathically. Piper is sassy and finds trouble. Ryder is the level-headed on.  But they get caught up in an Ishtar prophecy and have to figure it out…
Two book boyfriends appear in this novel – Victor the vamp (swoon) and Finn (the boy next store.)
I had a lot of personality in this novel, much like WALKER, I never really knew what was going to come out of their mouths.

What made you want to write a vampire novel?
I’ve been a fan of vampires since that Keanu Reeve movie – Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I was really young – maybe my mom shouldn’t have let me watch it, but she did. I love vampire movies. I love the stories. It’s what I know – so for my first novel – it made perfect sense.

How do you manage to juggle being a school teacher, new mummy, and a writer?
I am not sure you can say I juggle. I struggle J  I have supportive family and friends. I def wouldn’t publish if I didn’t have people who help with the actually publishing process or people to watch my little one.
Plus I don’t care if my house is a mess.

What was the last book you read that gave you a book hangover?
Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins – I’m a huge fan of her. I love Kaiden Rowe (His last name is actually my last name). It was provocative, but not over the top. It was a solid story. I am still annoyed I have to wait until April.

What can we expect from you next? Is there anything that you’re currently working on?
It’s a contemporary piece I originally wrote years ago (like 6?). It’s something I need to personally finish. It’s about a girl named Tess Walters who gets her heart stomped on. She was in love and is blindsided by the break up. She doesn’t cope. Period. She finds a helping hand in an unlikely spot – her grandfather.

It’s in its basic form. I need to amp up the characters a little, make some scenes a little more sassier, and smooth it out. I hope to have it out in March or April.

Thank you so much for joining me, Michelle!

Review: The Owens Legacy: Revelations

The Owens Legacy: RevelationsThe Owens Legacy: Revelations by Michelle Flick
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Published: February, 2012

When telepathic twins, Piper and Ryder Owens are dumped at Evermore Academy, they thought that the only thing they’d have to worry about was Piper staying out of trouble long enough for them to graduate. They will not, for any reason, be separated. But someone at Evermore knows about their secret and wants to separate them permanently.

But then Piper’s Achilles Heel shows up: a good looking guy. Victor Mira is everything Piper is supposed to avoid, yet she feels drawn to him in a way she never imagined. But Victor is hiding a dangerous secret too, and what he knows could be the one thing that could divide the sisters. Forever.

Michelle Flick's debut novel is a fresh take on the vampire lore that we have come to know. At a time, when the market is flooded with numerous vampire novels, I was glad to find that The Owens Legacy: Revelations has its own mythology.

What I really loved about this novel was the two main characters, Piper and Ryder. You can't deny how much the two of them grow on you, and I found myself 100% invested in what was happening to them.

And that ending! Oh my gosh! I'm still recovering from it! The twists that Michelle had skillfully woven into the story had me reeling. I can't wait to find out what comes next in this brilliant new series.

Author Interview: Michelle Flick

I am delighted to welcome the amazing Michelle Flick to my blog today. Her debut novel, The Owens Legacy: Revelations, came out in March and she is currently working on the sequel.
_____________________________________________

First off, could you tell us a bit about The Owens Legacy: Revelations?
The Owens Legacy is about a set of twins who have the telepathic ability to communicate with each other. Piper is an irrational teen that is the reason people say: Think before you speak - and in her case, act. Ryder is the rational part of the equation. She tries to be the voice of reason to Piper, with little success. The girls love each other very much and are unwilling to separate for any reason. And above all else, they are looking for a home.

What was the inspiration behind Revelations?
I experience writing like scenes from a movie in my head. Nope, not crazy. I just can visualize it so clearly and one day, "the movie" just started to play. I had dabbled in writing on multiple occasions in my life, and this time I was compelled to write. So was there a moment that was like: Wow this would make a great story? No. It was more like: Wow this idea won't get out of my head.

The majority of the book is written from Piper’s POV, but Ryder’s thoughts are also largely present in the story. Was that hard to balance?
It was extremely hard. Piper's voice is extremely strong and very defined in my head. But Ryder, is much softer that Piper, and unintentionally, she can be comical. I was really nervous that when I shared Ryder's thoughts and voice that it would come across very much like Piper's. And while they are twins, they are very different characters. I had several people look primarily at the voice of the girls to make sure that there was a balance and a separation.

Will there be a sequel to Revelations and are there any upcoming projects you are working on?
There is a sequel! I am working on it right now, slowly. Life is a bit crazy but it is my hope to have the draft done by summer so I can focus on it for my summer break. I do have another story that I have been drafting as well. I am a panster so I have typed out multiple scenes for this novel. It's about a girl who unwilling gets sucked into people's dreams and then there is a whole serial murder thing that she has to figure out. :)

What was your publishing journey like?
Very much like everyone else's, TOUGH. A little more clarification? So I edited a lot. I edited some more as people tore into my book. I edited some more. I Q-ed a lot of people. Oh, yeah, I edited some more. After a few rejections, I decided to start researching self-published. At that point, I pursued both the traditional and self-publishing paths. I just happened to not get any agent/publisher requests, so instead of being patient I focused more strongly on the latter of the two. I thought I knew a lot about self-publishing, but when I was doing it - there were a lot of things I was unprepared for. If you ever want to know more about it - shoot me a line. I promise you I can help.

Do you have any routines you follow during the writing process?
I write a lot of random scenes and then eventually I throw it all together. I, then, grump about all the editing. Not very professional, is it?

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
Someone said this to me. It may even be a famous quote but it fits. "If everyone could write, they would." Not everyone can. It's a special talent and if you have that talent, write.

- FUN FACTS -

Whose personality is similar to yours: Piper or Ryder’s?
Piper! She and I are very outgoing and my mom and dad are still trying to get me to think before I act/speak.

Fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction. I like that possibility of it all.

Pen or keyboard?
Keyboard. My brain functions faster than I can write. Typing allows me to move through my words faster so I don't miss out on anything.

Book or e-book?
Book. I love books. I love the smell. I love the look. I love to cuddle up with them.

Book shop or Amazon?
Depends. A book shop means I am spending at least 50 bucks on books. Amazon means I know what I want, so I go in and I buy it. It's more efficient for me.
